I = watashi reading = yomimasu book = hon Watashi wa hon o yomimasu. subject - object - verb Linking verbs: desu = is, are, am dewa arimasen = is not, are not, am not deshita = was, were deshita arimasen = was not, were not desho = suppose desu ne = isn't it? masu = added to a verb to express politeness, present tense mashita = past tense masen = not Past Tense Present Tense (Polite) Negative read read not read yomimashita yomimasu yomimasen Adjectives: omoi = heavy Positive: This book is heavy. Kono hon wa omoi desu. Negative: This book is not heavy. Kono hon wa omoku arimasen. Questions: who = donata / dare which = dochira / dore what = nani where = doko when = itsu why = naze / doshite how = dou ikura = how much? ikutsu = how many things? nannin = how many persons?
